The Rainbow Flag has become the worldwide symbol of gay pride but where did it come from and what does it mean?
Colour has long played an important role in our community's expression of pride. In Victorian Britain the colour green was associated with homosexuality. The colour lavender becomae popularised as a symbol of pride in the late 80's, a post Stonewall catchword for the gay community was 'purple power' and there's the pink triangle in Nazi Germany used to identify gay men of which a conservative guesstimate indicated 30,000 of whom died in the death camps.
But the most colourful of symbols is the Rainbow Flag and its colours of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple; which represent the diversity of our community.
The first Rainbow Flag was designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, a San Fransisco artist who created the flag in response to the call for the need for a community symbol.
According to Baker the colours represented sexuality, life healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit. The assassination of Harvey Milk, a San Francisco gay council supervisor made the flag a rallying symbol for pride and strength and unity. The aftermath of his death created the Pride event of 1979 which displayed the flag. Other stripes are sometimes added by various special interest groups.
